I find Japan to be a wonderful place to take a vacation at and learn about the culture (anime, manga, history, food, fashion, etc.), but not a great place to live because it's so expensive and their work ethics are AWFUL!

I got into learning Japanese from learning about the country's culture and I loved learning about their history in school :D
Although I did start learning Japanese by watching an anime, that was just a way to get a few basic words and understand how it should sound when spoken :D

This is so perfect. A little rugged in wording at the end but the substance of it is spot on.  Japan is much more complex than some of otaku clan may seem to get.

I really want to go to learn a bit of history, find a few historical landmarks, have some food, and maybe watch the cherry blossoms grow.

In the spring, anyway :/

Sheesh, if they love anime and manga so much, why wouldn't they want to learn about the culture at least just to know what the hell those mistranslated puns mean? the food's good, the culture, disciplines, folklore, religions, and history are rich and very interesting to learn about. Some are also very weird too, but that's still cool!

Oy...I wonder if weeaboo applies to other cultures too...

Tbh, I did learn a bit of Japanese from anime. But I learned more from various Internet websites (writing Kanji? I hardly even learned that from anime. I learned from the Mahou dictionary. Plus Wikipedia.). Even until now, I still have a tough time in Japanese grammar.

As for the Yuki part of your comment, does that translate to "Watashi no namae wa Yuki desu?" Just curious.

Yes :) you can learn words from anime, but if you talk as they do in animes, the japanese people will laugh of you since they call anime japanese "baby japanese" :) she dident see to understand that she couldent learn to hold conversations with people trough only learnig things from anime :) i have learned words from anime as well: kawaii, kowaii, neko and such :) im learnig numbers now, its difficult since some numbers have 2-3 words for eatch number and there are one word you cant say and sutch XD yes it dos :) although you can also say: "watashi wa yuki desu" :) but that is just a shorter wersion of it XD

I like the legends that the have, some are a bit strange. Like the being in the toilet who asks, "Red paper or Blue paper?" If you answer red, it'll cut you and you'll bleed to death. If you answer blue, you get choked to death til' you are blue. If you answer any other color, it'll still kill you. The safe answer is no paper. Some Japanese stuff is so weird, but I guess it's culture differences.

I wanna live in japan one day! The culture is so amazing!!! I remember talking to this one person on DA who lives in japan and they said:
our ancients said, "if people can do something, you can do it better. If no one can do it, then it's your responsibility to do it. And, when you do something, do it harder, smarter, faster and efficient. If you try something, do not fail. If you fail, rise up and learn. And, if you know what is above you, you must know what is your below so you can be the greatest legend for your own to create your better world."
Why can't we all be as wise as the Japanese? :c
