Books have value. But you can't learn everything from books. There are some things that you need to see and experience in order to truly understand them.
Also, I take issue with a few of the statements you made.

That depends on who the people around you are. If you're around enough smart people in your life, you'll learn things from them even when you're not really trying.
"School won't make you wise...."
You're not advocating that people drop out of school, are you? Once again, that depends on where you go to school.
